TinySpell by KEDMI Scientific Computing Personally, I've never been a good speller. I was the kid who was always one of the first to sit down at a spelling bee in school. Yes, with the advent of computer and 'spellcheck', those days are all behind me now. Of course, there are those times when a spellchecker is not readily available, such as filling out web site application forms, some online e-mail services, and even the smaller text computer programs such as Microsoft's notepad and wordpad. TinySpell is just the right tool for those circumstances. Here's the skinny: Platform..... I'm running TinySpell on Windows XP Pro and it works great. Tucows states “95, 98, Me, XP, 2000, NT. I think we can take their word for it! Web Site.......... The page for TinySpell is part of a larger site for a specific shareware program called Numerit. The page for TinySpell is short and concise, easy to read and only has a couple of ads on it. The page is complete with a program explanation, standard fonts, and even an 'easy to see' link to e-mail for information and comments about the program. Downloading........ The
site gives two download links, one is direct from the TinySpell
site and one is from Tucows. I found
the direct link very fast. Of course, the tucows link will take
you to their site first before downloading. Installation.......... TinySpell comes to you as a .zip file. Unzip the files into a directory of your choice and run the setup.exe file. You will be asked the standard questions (E.U.L.A., directory choice, etc.), and you're done. At this time, upgrading to a newer version doesn't require removing the old version. The downloaded zip file also contains a readme.txt file with general information about TinySpell and it's installation. Help Files.......... The help system for TinySpell is very good with a complete window for the section listings with each link opening a new window with the information you are inquiring about. There are detailed explanations of all of TinySpell's functions and comes with small pics of the icons found with the program. There are no text help files (readme.txt, fileid.diz etc.) in the program directory itself. Here's a pic of the help windows:
Interface & Features ........... After installing, TinySpell puts a small icon in your taskbar letting you know it's ready for action. Right clicking on this icon brings up the menu window with a number of choices. If you click on the 'Open spelling window...' listing, a small box opens up near your taskbar that will show the words you are typing one at a time on the fly. Here's a pic of the menu window from the taskbar and the TinySpell spelling window:
As you type, TinySpell keeps an eye on every word that you produce. You can see them appear in the window. Make an error, and a sound is heard and TinySpell turns the icon in the taskbar and the word in the window a bright color, letting you know that it's spelt wrong. Clicking on the check mark in the TinySpell window will bring up a panel with choices for the correction with the most probable ones listed first. Just highlight the word you want, click the check mark and TinySpell will correct it for you. Just like that! TinySpell also has configurable hot key combinations for word replacement and also to turn the program on and off. Here's a pic of the configuration window and another of a sample listing of correct:
You are also able to copy any word to the clipboard and check it's spelling. Simply highlight your choice, right click and copy, and TinySpell will show the word in the window. If you find it necessary, you can shutoff shutoff the checking on the fly via the configuration window shown above. With TinySpell you can even add your own words to it's dictionary via the correction window. Quite a nice piece of freeware that really comes in handy. Uninstall...... Uninstall for TinySpell is done via the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs icon. It also deletes it's directory. Problems....... The complete program has worked flawlessly for me however, I have only one small beef about TinySpell. If you are a fast typist (as I am), you may find that this program will drive you nuts telling you about an error when you are already typing the third word after the one misspelled. I think in that instance, it is better to use a program that has a built in, full document spell checker such as Open Office. For short typing applications though, TinySpell is just right! In Closing .......... I have found that this little ditty is perfect for small typing applications where there is the absence of any type of spellchecker. I suggest you download this freebie and give it a spin. Enjoy!! Buzzy J |
