System Studio by Tweak3D How would you like to find out EXACTLY what your operating system is including the version number and build, or everything that actually starts when you boot your system, or the version of your CPU. How about a printed report of your whole system. If you find yourself needing this information or, like me, you're just a bit curious, it's available along with a host of other information about your system in Tweak3D's "System Studio for Win 32". This utility allows the user to find lots of info about their computer for both hardware and software. I found that much of the information gathered by this program is familiar to me however, there is quite a bit of stuff here that I don't even recognize or understand. To compliment this utility, System Studio's web site contains TONS of information on just about everything that is mentioned in the program. Their pages are dedicated to getting the most out of your computer by allowing you to use "tweaking" utilities or settings which can boost the performance of your system. Other than trying System Studio, I suggest you take the time to give them a quick visit and bookmark their site. You just might find something there that may help you to get the most out of your system. Ahhhh.... oh yeah, the program!! :) Downloading........ Archive size is approx. 700K and the download connection was OK. I had a bit of trouble at first but I believe that was the fault of my connection on my end as the weather was bad and sometimes the lines are slow. It didn't take long but could have been faster. Installation.......... Total directory size when installed is 1.2 megs. A very nice feature dealing with the installation is that System Studio allows you to pick which items you want the program to check up on along with the approximate size of each module. This allows you to save a bit of hard drive space, especially if you just don't care about what "networking control" is. There are eight selections all together. Other than this feature, the installation is similar to many other programs using a simple installation module. Here's a pic of the components selection window:
Help Files.......... Since this utility is basically an "information" program, there is really no need for detailed help files, and with System Studio, there isn't any. Their web site if full of information dealing with the utility along with explanations dealing with a few of the topics that are covered in the system scan. A quick search on the internet should retrieve most of the other information of which you are not too sure about. Interface........... The program contains a tab style interface which give you different areas of information. Starting with the titles Main, System, Display, and Subsystem, it holds a total of 14 tabbed pages that could deal with your system depending on the hardware and software your computer uses. Here's a pic of the basic display:
As you can see, the Main tab sets the perimeters for the program itself such as "start with windows" and font settings. The layout of the window is fixed and is not expandable to the entire page. Personally, I like that in a utility like this as I only really use them for a minute or two, so full screen isn't really necessary to me! The windows are clean and easy to read, especially since you can pick your favorite font to read it with! :) Features........... The "System" page contains info on your System , System Studio Setup, Operating System, Application Information and Startup Programs. The two pages for "Display" and "Subsystem" help you gather information on your monitor setup and any special devices such as Open GL and Direct Draw. The "Reporting" tab allows you choose which information to add to your log file, in which format to make it (either text or HTML format), set where it goes, and allows you to delete it when you're done. Here, check this out:
The "Drives" tab allows you to see all of your possible drives and give related information on each. It also gives you immediate access to all of the necessary drive tools via icons on the window. A nice addition if you see something you don't like. :)
"Devices" gives you a list of hardware on your system and, if possible, gives you the name of each device that it finds. I was rather surprised at this as it found my old Connor QIC-80 tape backup which I still have installed, but rarely use. In fact, I don't even see it listed in my Win 98 setup. Rather neat I thought!! :) I was very surprised to find out all the information that was obtained from the "CPU" tab on my computer. This program will tell you exactly what processor you are running, what speed it's running at, and it also shows most of the extended features and cache features of your processor. I was able to find out the ID code for my PIII as well as the fact that it has MMX code, which I didn't even realize it had. Here's what System Studio found on my computer:
There are tabs if you computer is running Voodoo and Nvidia graphic cards which will give you lots of information on these features. Personally, I'm not running them so I can't really tell you how they work as for as how precise the info is. You'll have to figure that out for yourself. There is also "Network" and "Network Reporting" tabs, as well as a tab for "MBM" (Motherboard Monitor). Problems........... With the program itself? No, not for me. I DID have a problem with understanding quite a bit of the information that was given in the program. Of course, that may be considered a good thing as I found it necessary to do a few searches on the Inet to discover what some of the given terms were. I suppose I can actually say I know more about my computer now than I did before, so this "problem" could be considered a plus. :) In Closing........... For information purposes, I found that System Studio gave me much more information than I had expected including quite a bit of information that I didn't know anything about. Of course, a few quick searches on the internet, including their site, and all unknown information was resolved! This is the first computer info program that I've tried that is freeware and I've found it pretty good. If you've tried others (freeware of course), send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to check it out and perhaps compare it to this one. Enjoy Buzzy J |
