Personally, spelling bees in elementary school for me were a drag. I just couldn't spell correctly. I was always the first to sit down! Acckkk!! Who would have thought that in the future, I wouldn't need to worry about getting every word right by looking in a dictionary!

With APSC Spell Checker, spelling correction is made easy for just about any document that you display on your computer. With just a few mouse clicks, you can correct that spelling in your Web mail, simple text editor, or anywhere where a spell checker is needed (like a spelling bee :) ) that doesn't have one already!

Downloading........

Size zipped: 4.8 megs (.exe file)

Size Installed: 272 k , plus lots in the Windows/System dir!

The downloaded file is a self install .exe and is 4.8 megs in size. Took about a minute on DSL and a 56k shouldn't take more than 5 to 10 minutes.

Web Site..........

APSC Spell Checker is no longer supported free ware and therefore, the web site has not been updated. However, all of the download links I tried work fine including the dictionaries. There is a short FAQ page with a few questions about the freeware. The site is not bright and is easy to read with no advertising or popups!

Installation..........

The file is an .exe file so it's all a matter of finding your download, clicking on it, and following the prompts. A simple install wizard will do the work for you. Easy and simple. I suggest a reboot too, though it doesn't ask you to do it. This program puts a few files in it's own directory, then crams the rest in the Windows/System dir.

(A Buzzy Suggestion: The install wizard will give you a directory to install to, which is usually C:\program files\Palware\APSC 4.0 directory. What I like to do is replace the "Palware" directory with the name "Spellchecker" or what ever the freeware being installed is designed to do. Why?? If I need to find a specific file for the program or if I uninstall, the directory for the program is easy to find! Hey when you've got as much freeware installed as I do, you need these little references!)

Help Files..........

The help file consists of a standard help file format complete with a small tutorial, descriptions and details about the program. It's very easy to read. The displays are minimal as there is really not too much to see with this program. It's very functional but not pretty!! :)

Interface...........

As I stated above, there is really not much to see with APSC Spell Checker. The program itself consists of a text box into which you place the words to be spell checked. There are small icons along the top for "Spell Checking, Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All, and Clear All". Below the text area are radio buttons for "Options, Help, and About". Here's a pic of that layout:

The design of the checking window resembles may of the spell checkers that run in some of the bigger commercial programs such as Word, and freeware such as StarOffice. There is a list of helpful suggestions and buttons to do all the spell check editing, including adding to your custom dictionary. Here's a pic of the layout. It's very easy to understand and read:

The spelling options window is clear and gives you check boxes for options and list boxes for your dictionaries. Here's the options pic:

Features...........

As any standard spell checker found in the big boys, this one works well. There is a bit of a process involved in getting it to work, but considering that you can check just about anything with text, It's well worth the bit of effort involved in getting this bit of code to work properly.

The process involves getting the words copied into your clipboard. You can press the "Find your Message" text box at the top of the APSC window which collects all the text from any box you click on. A simple highlight and right click to copy will also do the trick. Then, click the paste icon to input the words to the frame. Click spell, and away you go.

The program will list what it finds spelt wrong and gives you suggestions to put in it's place. A few simple clicks, and you're done. Running five test words, I found that the suggestions given by the APSC Spell Checker were similar in context and content as those given by both Star Office, and Word 2000. It's standard dictionary seems quite complete!!

After checking the spelling, it is simply a matter of copying the text back to the clipboard via the copy icon and clicking on the "Send Text Back to Message" box, or by going back into the original document where you will highlight the old text, press "Ctrl-V" and volia, your text is as it was except for the spelling. A quick save and you're finished.

The spelling window stays on top and can be minimized into a small bar which fits hidden in any place you choose. Here's a small picture of the program minimized:

The Options area lets you select the Stay On Top mode, Start Minimized in the Tray, and gives you the option to choose a font size.

The dictionaries are in many flavors from the web site. These include British, Spanish, and French.

Problems.........

I checked every saved document of every review I've done in my word processing program (no spell checker) and I had no trouble at all. Though this program is released "AS IS" and is not supported anymore by the authors, it runs rock solid! I even did some spelling corrections in my personal online photo album where I have some captions below the pictures. It went through the entire page, checking all of the words it contained.

Closing.........

A great spell checking program. Now I won't have to sit on my Excite online e-mail client wondering what words I can use to replace the ones I can't spell!! A simple cut copy and paste, and I'm on my way. Hey................. anybody up for a spelling bee!? :)

Enjoy
