Simply Backup CDRW by Tong Software Inc. I was searching for a nice piece of backup software that wasn't too big but did exactly what I needed; being able to do a backup with little effort directly to my cd burner. Simply Backup CDRW is exactly what I was looking for. It's size and simplicity make it very attractive for everyone who doesn't care about bells and whistles, just workable software that will back up your data. Check this out: Platform..... It's running on Windows XP Pro and Windows 98 just fine. The .txt files state that it was tested on a Win2000 machine. I would give it a go on any 32 bit windows operating system, though the documents that I found do not give any specific list. Web Site.......... The web site for Simply Backup CDRW is quite small and, like the program, no frills. A simple black page with white lettering and red highlights gives you information and download links for the program. Downloading........ The
download comes from their site and was quick and immediate. No
problem were encountered. You have the choice of downloading the
.exe or the .zip file for your installation. Also, the readme.txt
and history.txt are downloadable just in case you'd like a bit
more information about Simply Backup before actually getting the
program and installing it. Installation.......... The self install .exe only asks for a place to put the program and that's it. I really doesn't get much easier than that. Of course, the .zip file download will have to be opened with your favorite freeware compression program before installing. There is no registry entry with this program, which I really appreciate. Help Files.......... There's not much help here! Unfortunately, there is only a couple of .txt files within the programs directory to give you any information. The program itself is very easy to use so help files may not be necessary. Each icon has a help window that appears showing the function. Interface & Features ........... SB has a simple, nicely arranged interface which has all of it's features right at your mouse tip. You'll notice that there's no menu items! That's how simple it is! Here's a pic:
The arrows on the right of the large window are what you click when you choose what directorys/files you'll be inserting or removing from your backup profile. After choosing what will be written to your CD burner, you can give it a name to save the configuration. When you are choosing your targets the interface is a standard file window. Here's a pic:
Just pick the files and folders from the right window and click the far right icon at the top. Each selection will be listed in the opening window of SimplyBackup. Once you have your list, you have some nice options to choose from as far as the actual burn goes. To the bottom of the active screen there are checkboxes which you place a check mark in for the functions of 'erase disk before backup' (CDRW only), 'continue multisession disk', 'close disk' and 'eject disk when done'. Just make your setting selections, click the 'burn' icon at the top, and SimplyBackup CDRW does the rest. Once done burning, you'll find an added directory on your CD which is titled with the date and time of the backup. Inside you'll find all of your prized data, safe and sound! SimpleBackup is just that simple. There's no disk compression, no encryption, no task scheduling. It DOES support 'burn-proof', multisession, as well as dynamic power laser control. You can have multiple sessions saved with different backups for each session. Uninstall...... When setting up your profiles in Simply Backup, you will be making .ini (information) files which are inserted into the programs directory. When uninstalling, you'll get a window asking you to approve the removal of these files. Here's a pic:
You should have no problem removing these files, but it's nice that they ask!! As with most programs (yes, I did say MOST!) uninstall is done via the control panel> add/remove programs. It's fast and will remove all installed files however, you'll have to remove the directory manually. Problems...... I've used the program in both of my computers, one with XP Pro and the other with Win 98 and I've yet to see a problem. In Closing .......... Yes, the name says it all. Simply Backup is small, handy, and easy to setup and use. Just a couple of clicks and you can save that data anytime! Enjoy!! Buzzy J |
