Quick Shutdown by Shatran Software

After looking at countless programs to review, I realized that day after day I was using a small utility constantly and never gave it a second thought. I (sniff) took it for granted! Well, it's time to give this little ditty it's due worth. Quick Shutdown is just that, a quick way to shut down the beast! Oh, and a few other things too. Here's the details:

Platform.....

Runs great on 95, 98, Me, XP, 2000, NT. That pretty well covers it!

Web Site..........

The web site contains four programs for downloading, one of which is this one. The layout is neat showing a small pic of each program and links to more info and for downloading. The 'more info' link will bring you to more information for each program including more detailed screenshots.

Downloading........

The download originates from the web sites provider and is a good, fast connection.
Size Downloaded: 520k
Size Installed: Approx. 309k in it's directory, plus the files installed in the windows directory.

Installation..........

The file is a zip file so make sure that you have one of the excellent freeware compression utilities installed on your machine. Just click on the file and it should open. Place it in a directory of your choice (I use a directory called “install”) and click on the .exe file. The installer will do a bit of work and then a window from them will be displayed. Then, the usual window warnings about shutting down programs and copyright material, the EULA, it's directory, a summary, then the installation. Very quick and easy. No rebooting is necessary.

Help Files..........

There are no help files available with Quick Shutdown however, there are three .txt documents in the programs directory. One is the file_id.diz used by bbs's for listing purposes, one is a short txt .doc on their other software, and the last one is the detailed description of the program. This would be the one to go to for the information needed.

Interface & Features ...........

As usual with many other small utilities, there is nothing really extravagant about this programs interface except to say that it places a small icon in your taskbar which is where you'll go to use this little piece of code. Here's a pic of the icon in the taskbar (circled):

When you right click on this little icon, you'll get a menu complete with all of the selections that you can use. Here's a pic of that same little icon with it's menu open:

Within this menu you'll see the 'Options' item which will give you your setup options for the utility. Here's the pic:

From this option menu pic, you can see that Quick Shutdown can be set to perform a particular function with just one click on the icon in the taskbar. Mine is set to shutdown the whole system, but you can restart, log off, stand by, hibernate, lock the workstation, eject your cd's from your trays, or do nothing at all. On the right, you can choose hot keys to perform all of the same functions. The window at the bottom shows all of your media drives that could hold cd's to remove, plus two radio boxes to allow you to eject your media at shutdown, and to check for media before ejecting. Oh, and if you want you can change the tray icon and set the program to force applications to quit when shutting down.

The program itself is very functional and right clicking on the icon in the taskbar lets you choose any of the options available from the program. Everything with a right click! I could be wrong, but my computer seems to shut down faster using this utility than if I use the usual start/turn off computer method. It has also consistently reminded me of cd's that I've left in the tray on shutdown, which I am very bad for doing!

Uninstall......

Uninstall for Quick Shutdown is performed via the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs icon. It also deletes it's directory.

Problems.......

The only problem I've had with Quick Shutdown was doing this document. I kept clicking on the damn icon and kept closing the computer down while doing this review! Other than that's, it's seems flawless.

In Closing ..........

There now, I feel so much better. I've given Quick Shutdown it just due. Considering I've used it for over two months, I guess it was about time. Download it, install it and............

Enjoy!!
