iDailyDiary by Splinterware Software Solutions There's nothing like keeping a daily diary to help those who what to document their thoughts and feelings when dealing with the struggles of the day, such as losing weight (don't worry, I won't go there!). iDailyDiary is quite small (under 2 megs) yet will do a great job on keeping your personal stuff in order, safe and secure. There's lots of great options available so that you can really fill those pages. Lets see what we can find: Platform..... Runs great on my XP Pro! I'm sure it will also run on most other Win32 systems. Web Site.......... The web site features some great little programs of which this is one. It's easy to read and comes complete with a 'tour' of the software, showing some nice screenshots. Downloading........ The
download comes from their site and was quick and immediate. No
problem. Installation.......... The downloaded file is a .zip so you'll need your favorite decompresser to open it up (I like ZipCentral!). The zip contains a single setup.exe file which will start the process. You'll get the usual stuff (no E.U.L.A.!) and you're done. I didn't see any files go into any other directory other than it's own, which is a plus. Help Files.......... There's nothing fancy here. iDailyDiary uses the standard help file engine to present a simple user guide for it's operation, complete with screenshots of it's features. Interface & Features ........... For a diary program, I really like the layout of this software. Everything you'll need is right there on the desktop with either an icon or an arrow button. Here's a pic of the interface. Notice the spiral binding design on the left. A rather nice touch:
The font color, size and font background are all configurable, performed through the 'preferences' menu item. Here's a pic of that window:
Your diary is password protected to keep prying eyes out of your personal information and your data is encrypted so that there's no way to get into it. Here's a pic of the 'Security' section of the preferences area:
A great feature of iDailyDiary is it's 'Autosave' which you can see at the bottom of the pic above. I am hopelessly unable to remember to save much of my work while writing and this feature takes care of that problem. Saving is done in the background and is not even noticeable. IdailyDiary allows you to not only input text into your diary, but you can include pics within your pages. It supports the .jpg, .bmp, .gif, .wmf, .ico, and .emf format. You'll get a thumbnail when you search for your pics and the program has the ability to adjust the picture right from the document so that it will fit in the way you want it too. Here's a pic of the selection and adjustment windows:
Each entry date in your diary can have multiple pages which have tabs attached along the top with a title in each one (see the first pic for an example). You can also tag text with a hyperlink which will start your favorite web browser or you can link to another page in your diary, all with the click of an icon. At the bottom of the diary is the month bar which shows you all of the days for the current month. Each day with an entry is highlighted and there are arrow buttons to the left which allow you to go from one month to another, all with a click. iDailyDiary also has a complete search function so that you can search your entire diary, the one page or get more specific between dates. Here's a pic of the search engine window:
The program is very functional, clean, easy to use and has enough features to be attractive to both young and old alike. It's not fancy but is quite attractive none the less. Uninstall...... Uninstall is done via the control panel> add/remove programs. It's fast and will remove all installed files however, it will need to have it's directory removed manually from your file manager to delete the 'data' directory with your info! Problems...... None. In Closing .......... iDailyDiary has some great features for such a small package. If your getting ready to quite smoking, lose weight, or just want to keep a daily entry of your thoughts and beliefs, pick up a copy of this and give it a spin. You may be surprised! Enjoy!! Buzzy J |
