Flexible Renamer by Naru Changing the name of a large group of files individually can be a real pain in the butt. You may find that files transferred from your digital camera to your hard drive are in order, but their names consist of a group of letters and numbers that usually don't identify the pics themselves. Plus, after you transfer the files from your camera and delete them from it's memory, the next set of pics taken with your camera can have the same name as the files you've just uploaded. Different pictures, same name!! Flexible Renamer by Naru will take a batch of files and give them the name of your choosing. Here, take a peek and dive in: Platform..... The site states '2000 – XP' but it is in an oriental language and the English page doesn't mention it. I can't say if it works in 98/SE though. If it does, please e-mail me so that I may add it to this review. Ahhhh..... thanks to a recent review reader, they have confirmed that Flexiable Renamer DOES work in Me and 98SE. Thanks so much! Web Site.......... The link above goes to the English page of this oriental site. There are a few sceeenshots and a list of improvements for the different versions. There is info on the program and the really nice thing about this site is that you can't miss the download link, it's the second thing you see after the site counter. Downloading........ A nice connection and
quick download for this .zip file. Installation.......... This installation is easy but not automatic. Open the Zip file with your favorite freeware compression utility, make a directory for the files with you're freeware file manager (or use the new directory maker in your compression utility), and place the files in that directory. You can call it anything you like so I called mine 'renamer'. Original right? :) Make an icon for it on your desktop or freeware launch bar, and you're all set. Help Files.......... Well, you won't find anything fancy here. Hitting the 'Help' menu brings up a readme text file from the directory. It's fairly hard to read as the text has shifted quite a bit in notepad so I suggest you use 'wordpad' to view it. The file has all of the basics to run the program, including some tips. Interface & Features ........... Putting the lack of complete help files aside, there is quite a bit of functionality in this program. I have used this consistently for renaming files that I move from my digital camera to my hard drive and I've found it very easy to use. Here's a pic of the opening interface:
Flexible Renamer is easy to use. Just pick a directory where your files are on the left, select the work that you want to do to your files from the middle, and check in the right window to make sure that your files are going to be renamed and directed the way you wish. Click 'Rename' and volia, your finished. The program is really fast too as I have changed up to 175 photo file names in one session with a total time used at approx. 15 seconds. As shown, you can change the name in any number of combinations such as the Date Time (default), strings (words that will be on all files), adding numbers to the beginning/end of any string plus more. You can set the number of digits in the filename (excellent for naming over 100 pics to keep them in order, such as 001!), and even the start number. This is very handy if you are combining bunches of pics from different directories to one directory. The window can be expanded to show you quite a bit of information including a list of the files after they have had their names change. The column's are adjustable, as are the individual windows for each specific area. Along with all of the above goodies, Flexible Renamer can also copy and rename to another folder, has an undo feature, allows the use of wildcards, and has a multiple file filter. Here's a pic of the 'context menu option' window with all of the possible settings:
Honestly, there is nothing that makes renaming bunches of files easier than Flexible Renamer. Uninstall...... Delete the directory you put everything into with your file manager. It's that easy! Problems....... Renamer has worked flawlessly for me since I installed it about three months ago. In that time I have changed the name of at least 1000 pictures. Yup, you could say I've been busy! In Closing .......... Flexible Renamer is an excellent freeware utility for individuals who work with batches of files. I've included it in my collection along with many other great freeware programs especially for my work with digital photos and I suggest you give it a try and maybe include it in yours. Enjoy!!
