EasyCleaner by ToniArts |
There's nothing like a little bit of house cleaning to get your place looking good! The same goes with your computer too. EasyCleaner is a system cleaning utility taking the clutter and garbage out of your system and sending it to the nearest bin for disposal! |

EasyCleaner by ToniArts After
booting up your computer, you start to do the things you usually
do on it every day. A bit of e-mail, or perhaps going over some
newly created digital pics. Maybe working with a desktop
publishing program while your listening to your favorite mp3's.
While these programs run, your system is becoming a host to
literally hundreds of files that are completely unnecessary. Many
programs create these files as their normal process of running.
In other words, they can't help it! Many of these programs remove
these files when they shutdown, and many do not. EasyCleaner will
weed out those zombie files and get rid of them, saving space and
in many incidences, making your system run faster. Along with
files, EasyCleaner will check the registry, your startup list,
find duplicates....... well here, take a look at
this: EasyCleaner will run on Windows 95 on up to XP. It will run on a 486 with minimal amounts of ram too. Web Site.......... The English edition of their web site has an 'easy to read' layout with large, dark fonts on light backgrounds. No animation or flashes here. On the left is your menu where EasyCleaner is located and the page for the program contains the usual screenshots, history, requirements, download links and the 'what's new'. Downloading........ From
what I can tell, the one download makes EasyCleaner workable in
up to 23 different languages!! Whew, and no, I'm not doing a
review for it in each one!!! The site gives you a choice between
an .exe installer or just the files in a .zip program.
Downloading is fast and without any registering hassles. Installation.......... If
you download the .exe installer (suggested), EasyCleaner uses an
'Install Shield' wizard to get itself on your hard drive. These
nicely designed installation windows give you the same generic
questions as found in other installations. There's the directory,
the installation, and the finish! Super quick and easy.
EasyCleaner defaults the installation to a directory called
'toniarts' in your program files directory. As far as help files goes, EasyCleaner is nothing fancy. The enclosed help file with the program is designed in the Comic font and is without any screenshots. It takes each section of EasyCleaner and proceeds to explain all of the functions for that section. The site mentions a 'messageboard' however, at the time of this writing it was down. There is also a frequently asked question page on their site that answers some basic questions. The help files can be found in Greek, Russian, French, Finnish and English. Interface & Features ........... The program starts with a nicely designed opening window where you'll be accessing all of the major functions. Each section has it's own icon which when clicked, opens the window for that feature. The area on the right gives some info for each area too. Here's a pic of the opening window:
Lets start by looking at the first icon. The registry section checks the always important registry file for entries that point to non-existent information and gets rid of it. These entries can happen basically when you make any changes to your system such as adding and deleting programs. Within here you'll find a basic window that's titled 'Clean Registry'. Here's a pic of that window after I ran it on one of my computers:
As
you can see, I've found 63 invalid entries in my registry. One
click of the 'delete all' button, and they're gone. The 'Save'
button allows you to copy the list in html format for easy
reference. Later, well look at the 'undo' button to get back
those registry keys in case there's a problem.
Have
you notice all of the freeware listed!!? I just thought I'd bring
that to your attention!
There
were quite a few duplicates and I didn't delete all that showed
on the list. For an example, I keep previous copies of the Stall
Wall in a separate directory and some of the files do tend to be
the same. I just left them and deleted ones I knew I wouldn't
need.
The 'shortcuts' icon will bring a window that will check for shortcuts that do not have a object point to go to. This can happen when a program is uninstalled, and the uninstall utility doesn't get rid of all of the shortcuts (the same for registry keys), it just deletes the program. This section will delete them. The 'Space Usage' window is quite neat. This will take an area on your computer hard drive and give you a basic pie chart as to what is exactly there, in what percentage compared to the other areas it ranks, and exactly how big each area is in bytes (configurable too!). Here's a pic to give you a good example of everything that it shows to you:
As in the other areas, you can save your information to file and print it up if you need a hard copy. I was rather impressed with the statistics showing here and found it quite useful! The 'Startup Inspector' takes a look at all of the programs listed on your Windows setup to start when you boot up the computer. Check this out as you might be surprised at what runs in the background on your system. The next four buttons are simply icons to do some of the basic functions that just about everyone has used in Windows. They are to 'Clear Files', 'Cookies', 'History' and to 'Clear Most Recently Used (MRU)' files or in other words, your previously viewed documents. One click on each of these will do the trick! The last functional area is EasyCleaner's 'Undo' utility, which will take the changes you've made to the registry in the first area and put them back in place. Yes, there can be times that you're not sure exactly what you're deleting in the registry, and I know personally that I had gotten to the point of wiping off the hard drive and reinstalling Windows just for the reason of playing with the registry. YES, it is that important! This Undo feature will bring your registry back to it was before you did a house cleaning. Hopefully, you'll never have to use this though! :) As for the other areas of deletion, most of these can be replaced by using the recycling bin, if you have it set to put your deletes in it. After your 'Updates' area you have the 'Options' icon which will bring up a ten tabbed window where you will make all of your adjustments to this program. From here, you can make specific changes to almost everyone of EasyCleaner's areas. Here's a few more pics to give you an idea on the certain settings available:
The
final three buttons are 'About', 'Help', and 'Close', which are
pretty well self explanatory! Enjoy!! Buzzy J |
