When it comes to freeware, you never know what to expect! Some programs lose support, some change from freeware to shareware (dirty dogs!!), and some go to other formats such as commercial ware, spyware, etc. etc. In the category of freeware download managers, the pickings are quite slim. One of the best that I've found is DLExpert, which continues to be developed and supported by it's author. It's still freeware, and this program is packed with nice features that will interest the most diehard downloader.

But, what is a Download Manager!!?? Think of it as a program that will assist you in making your downloading experience easier, faster, and more continuous!

Downloading........

Size zipped: 770k megs

Size Installed: 1.4 megs in it's directory plus system files.

At the time of my download, there were no problems. I have seen a few minor complaints about the link, but I didn't experience any problems.

Web Site..........

The web site for DLExpert is nothing fancy, but has all of the basic information about the program in text format. From the site, you can download the program as well as the supported language files. There is a small FAQ area answering a few common questions.

Installation..........

This downloaded file is a self install .exe so an extraction utility is not necessary. DLExpert uses a common install runtime showing a license agreement, and offering you a place on your hard drive to install the program. It's fast and easy.

Help Files..........

The help files consist of a split window .html file which gives you an index on the left with the information on the right. The manual is straight forward and give explanations of most of the features complete with pics of the interface. The entire manual has a directory all to itself in the DLExpert directory containing the pics and .html files.

Interface...........

DLExpert has a database type interface which gives a list of all downloads past, present, and future. The width of the title bars are adjustable and these contain quite a bit of information such as URL, Status, Resume, Bps, Estimated time, Threads, plus more. Here's a pic:

As you can see, the top has a tool bar with most of the commands that you'll need to perform most of the functions. Below the toolbar, there is a graphic display showing the progress of your current download. I found this a nice addition however, I noticed that if you adjust this during a download, it starts over.

Features...........

The two best features that any download manager could have is it's ability to resume downloads and to download in a multi-threaded mode.

If you are in the process of downloading and your power goes off, you usually have to start over. When using DLExpert, and if the file being downloaded supports automatic resume, you can go back online, click on the file in the window, and your download will start again FROM THE PLACE IT LEFT OFF!! Downloads such as Star Office 5.2 are sized up to 100 Megs! Image starting a download of that super sized file and getting 90 megs of it, only to have your provide accidentally log you off!! Ack!!! Using DLExpert, you can download as much as you want, knowing that the next time you're online, you can continue from where you left off and still get the whole thing.

The other feature is multi-threading which is basically the ability of DLExpert to download successive parts of the same file on different threads, literally allowing you to get your file faster. This option is configurable, allowing you to pick the amount of threads you wish to use or let DLExpert decide for itself. Here's a pic of the config window showing the selection of different options.

Here's some other nice features which I've found while using this program:

1/ There's a nice mini-window for each file listed in the program when you're pointer is on it.

2/ At this time, I'm checking out IE beta 6. DLExpert has an icon on the toolbar!!! I don't know how it was put there, but it's there, and it's handy too!! Here it is circled:

3/ Access to DLExpert from your browser or right click for the menu where it's listed there!

Here's a list of more great features that this program has to offer. It comes right from the web site:

Simultaneously download HTTP files, support authority file.

Simultaneously download FTP files, support anonymous user and non-anonymous user.

Simultaneously download different parts of same file.(Need server support)

Divide file into any parts. There are two ways to divide, one is divide fixed parts, the other is divide according to a certain size.(Need server support)

Divide thread job in downloading process,"split method". It make rate keep quick in whole download process.(Need server support)

Support resuming. If you don't finish last time,DLExpert will continue downloading rest parts.

Support HTTP and FTP Proxy ,and support authority proxy.

Auto-dial and auto-hangup

Schedule downloading

Auto-shutdown when finish

Files can be saved in different folders according to their suffixes

Auto-run virus killer when finish a job

Use sounds to report events

Add URL from a file.

Problems.........

Well, I do believe that this program is still in a beta format as it has yet to hit the "Version 1.00" mark yet, and the recent update has fixed a bug however, I have used it consistently every day for the past three weeks and I have yet to have a problem. There is something mentioned about this program not being compatible with MS proxy. I'm not sure what that means but like I said, I haven't had any problems.

Closing.........

Freeware download managers are not the most commonly found freeware on the internet today. There are some that have gone shareware and adware. I hope that DLExpert will NOT be one of these when it hits Version 1.00. This is one great freeware program to assist you in your downloading experience and I strongly suggest that you get this piece and install it. You won't be sorry.

Enjoy
