Diary Defender by Xaltra ShockWare

There's nothing like keeping a running tabulation of your daily life in print to help the mind and soul sort out all of those little surprises that life tends to place upon us. Diary Defender is the perfect little program for placing all of those thought and ideas, and, considering the small size and the functionality of this great little freeware program, I would suggest you make it a useful part of your hard drive space!

Downloading........

As usual, it's small size tends to make it very attractive to the online community with slower modems. At 1.5 megs, the download is a breeze even with a 28.8 as the server is very fast.

Installation..........

The download is a self install .exe file which you just have to find and click on to get it to run. The installation procedure is a standard install wizard and will guide you through the easy installation of all of the necessary files. This program requests that you reboot your computer after it has been installed. I guess I don't have to do my usual reminder here then eh? :)

Help Files..........

Well, there really is no help files but I don't think the average user is going to need them as the text is very straight forward as to what you have to do and after all, it's function is not really all that complicated. There is a .htm file in the programs directory which when opened, will list the features and give the different changes for each of the versions released.

Interface...........

The interface for this program is really quite attractive and easy to use. After your logon screen where you put your username and password you will get a window which gives you your choices as to what to do. Here's a couple of pics of the intro screen and the choice window.

As you can see, the program gives you choices like writing an entry for today, modifying an entry, filling in a day you might have missed, and reading your entries. After choosing one, a small calendar pops up marking the present day. From here you can select the day you want to make an entry in. A text editor will then pop up allowing the user to type in or edit info for the date. The editor is nice and simple with features such as configurable fonts, cut copy and paste, image storage, and another access point to the preferences menu. The preferences allow you to set the startup parameters and notification time (just in case you forget to make an entry for that day, this program will remind you!!). Here's a pic of the preferences window:

Features...........

Quite a bit for the size of the program. There is multiple users allowed and each can be password protected. The program uses encryption to secure the files from other individuals who might try to read them somewhere else. It also allows an "unlimited" number of users however, there is a limit which is stated as being in the hard drive of the user and not the actual program itself. This program is small, simple yet is extremely functional and easy to use. Here's a pic of the processor interface:

Problems.........

I've used it for three weeks, every day and have yet to find one. There .htm does mention bugs and how to get in touch with the author if you find one. I suggest you do that and at the same time, thank them for a great freeware program!!

Closing.........

I am willing to give this little diary a spin when I start next years gardening season as I have been using a simple text doc through word pad for my gardening logs. For the author, I have one suggestion. There are days when I will not be including any entries and I would like to see the calendar come up with little marks or circles on the days that DO have an entry. As it is, there is no way to tell if a day has an entry or not except by going through them one by one. Just my two cents to help, but it's still a great diary program and I recommend this for anyone looking for a simple, small yet feature rich program to keep those secrets to yourself!

Enjoy
