4.6 megs HERE!

CobBackUp by Luis Cobin

There comes a time in the affairs of computing, whether purposefully or not, when we just loose data. It could be as simple as the .txt file with the grocery list, to a complete essay which has been worked on for days. Of course, the smart thing to do is to backup all of your information so that it will be easy to access if you encounter a problem with your computer. CobBackUp will make this task easy! Here's the skinny:

Platform......

Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, NT and XP as an application, 2000, NT and XP as a service!

Web Site..........

Now here's a site loaded with freebies!!! The layout is easy to read thanks to the black background and bright lettering. Follow down the listing and you'll find lots of free programs. You'll find the actual page for the program is identical. Bright lettering on a black background

Downloading........

Size Downloaded: about 4.6 megs

Size Installed: approx. 8.17 megs.

Installation..........

The download is a self install .exe file. The installation utility is quite different from what is usually used. Following along with the process, the installation utility will follow along the tabs showing below until the installation is complete.  Here's a screenshot:

Cobain Backup can be installed either as a seperate application or as a service for Windows XP. The installation will give you a choice of using the user account for the computer or you can allocate your own password. Here's a pic of that window:

Help Files..........

There is a license.txt, readme.txt, and history.txt file in the zip package which I suggest you read first to find out what's going on with the program. The actual help file is a one page, .html document which can be opened with your browser. On this you'll find lots of information. I suggest you read it over before digging into the program to give yourself a good idea on how CobBackUp works.

Interface and Features ...........

The interface itself is nothing fancy and is quite similar to a windows file manager, with different functions. The window is broken up into three separate areas. Tasks are listed on the left with the Task Identification on the upper right and the backup history for that paticular task. Here are two picks showing the view from each tab:

So how simple is it to create a backup with Cobain Backup? It's really as simple as making a task, picking what you want to put into the task to backup, pick a time and a place to put it, and start it up. Of course, there's much more to this program that that.  As you can see above, the task I created on listed on the left contains all of the data that I'm wanting to save in a specific area. If you 'add' or 'modify' a task, you'll be given a multiple tabbed window which will allow you to adjust the 'Task Properties'. Each tab gives you the ability to adjust setting for that task such as the files and directorys to save for that task, the places to save them, how many copies to save, the tasks name and more. Here are a few screenshots to give you an idea as to what you can do within the Task Properties area:

This tab gives you options such as the tasks name, backup overwrites, and how many copies to keep of a specific backup which will be dated as each one is progressed.

This is where you will pick what your sources will be for backup and where to put them. As you can see, Cobain Backup supports multiple areas to back up to. Also notice that you can click the 'Drag'n'drop from Explorer' highlight which will bring up a directory window for you to do exactly that, drag and drop!

This tab is where you will set your compression and encryption for your backup. Cobain Backup supports Zip compression including adding your own comment to the file as well as the ability to adjust the size of the zip which is handy for cd writing.  Encryption is supported and includes the above noted types.

Cobain Backup contains many options which are available from the 'Tools' menu area. Here's a few pics of the tabs noted from the options area giving you an idea as to what you can do for setting with this freebie:

This tab is where settings are made for the program priority, it's language and fonts, autostart (not highlighted in service mode) and more.

Though Cobain Backup has tons of features, it really easy to use, especially if you're just backing up simple data like I do. The interface is great and the features of this program are fantastic! With this ditty, there is no reason for you to loose any of your precious data again. Myself, I like to save all of my information to a specific area (such as a directory called 'Backup') and then copy the entire contents to a CD disk using a program such as Simply Backup CDRW.

Cobain Backup also supports Zip64 for files larger than 2 gigabytes as well as the ability to support third party plugins too. All in all, this program contains a really nice set of features! There's much more too but you'll just have to download it to see them all.

In Closing ..........

For solid backups of your system (which everyone should be doing), I certainly suggest you download CobBackUp and give it a shot. It may just be what you're looking for.

Enjoy
