XDesk95 by Applied Micros Pty Ltd. Have you taken a look at the poor excuse of a calendar that Microsoft packages with their operating systems? Pitiful isn't it!? Well, here's a little ditty that you may find more than handy! Xdesk95 has an excellent calendar, plus a diary, event calendar, scientific calculator, alarm clock, sticky notes, and a note tree. How's that for a calendar..... and a PIM!! Here's the scoop................ Platform ........ Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, NT and XP Web Site.......... The web page for Xdesk95 is part of a larger site which is run by Micros Pty Ltd. Which features many of their other programs, some of which are freeware. The layout is nice and clean making the pages easy to read. There are quite a few screenshots for you to view too. My link is to the Xdesk95 page but I suggest you click on the "Home" link at the bottom of their XDesk page and check out some of the other freebies there! Downloading........ Size Downloaded: about 600k Size Installed: 1.14 megs plus system files The download was instant and fast. You should have it in a blink of an eye. No registration is required. Installation.......... Xdesk95 is an .exe file which uses a standard Windows install utility that will get the program where it has to go. Just follow the prompts and you'll be just fine. Help Files.......... The help file with Xdesk95 is a one page display which shows you all of the basic features that are available. There is very little detail in the functions description but these should be quite apparent after "playing" with the program for a little while. Features ........... Xdesk95 opens up to the calendar/diary where it displays the months along with the diary and events settings found right below. You can set the time for the event, then lock it in and set the alarm to go off when the time has been reached. On the calendars, you can scroll to the month you need and there are buttons to the right to send you to the current date, find, schedule, and the help file. At the bottom is a simple infobar with the time, date and any overdue events in your lists. Here's a pic:
Hitting the second tab at the top brings you to an excellent note tree function which stores notes, phone numbers, info, stories, or what ever you need to save. You can create sub directories to categorize and organize your information, and there is a slew of icons on the top where you can cut, copy, paste, wordwrap plus, if you have phone numbers or e-mail addresses listed, there are icons to allow you to call the number listed in your info as well as send e-mail via your configured mail program. You can access this from right clicking on the info which will bring you the icons via a popup menu. To top it off on this tab, there is a data function which gives you that ability to work with data tables complete with simple equation formulas!! You can insert and delete rows, get the sum of cells and the product of cells. It's great for address books, money lists, etc. Here's a pic:
The last tab will bring you to the scientific calculator which has numerous functions developed to drive a math dummy such as myself crazy however, if you working in a profession where this type of calculator is necessary, give it a try! It just might be to your liking. :) Here's a pic of the calculator:
Problems....... There are no serious issues that I know of on this great program. One thing that I thought could be looked at is the "Make a stick-on note" function that you can use when you right click the little date display in the task bar. It seems to disappear after a reboot! I thought it would be nice if the notes were stored and stayed on, that's all! Here's a sample:
In Closing .......... This is one simple yet functional personal information manager that no one should be without on their computer. The size is minimal considering what this code contains and there's a little bit here for just about everyone. I strongly suggest you at least download and install the program just to give it a try, it just might catch you like it caught me!
