JExplorer by Woo Sik Jung Ahhhhh........... spring! The flowers are starting to show and the air is filled with.........................file managers?? That's right! Last week, I featured a file manager that was small in size and big in features. This issue, I'm featuring a file manager which is a bit bigger in size, with a completely different list of features. A power user can be really picky when it comes to file managers, and most have their favorites. JExplorer has some really great additions which just might interest you. Here we go. Downloading........ Size zipped: 4.3 megs Size Installed: 2.5 megs in it's directory plus system files (aprox. 8 megs total) This file has been basically a beta as the author has been releasing updates on a regular basis. The link took a few seconds to register before I was able to allow the download the file. I'm not sure if that was due to the site being busy, or a bum server. Once I was able to ok the download, it was no problem at all. Installation.......... JExplorer is a self install file. It utilizes a standard install runtime and is on your machine ready to go in seconds. No rebooting is necessary but I still am advising a reboot anyway. Just a reminder that you should make sure all programs are shut down before installing. Help Files.......... This program does not win any awards for its help files as it contains a one page spread which basically gives the highlights and explains a few features found in the program. Make sure you have an idea on how to setup an e-mail account and FTP account as the knowledge willl be necessary. There are no wizards to help guide you through these. If you are already familliar with file managers, carry on!! Interface........... The interface is made up of two screens at install, both representing different areas of your computer. The fonts are configurable, and there is a toolbar spread along the top which contains access icons to most of the programs on JExplorer. Using this toolbar, you can access the e-mail areas, the FTP area, the user menu (desktop icons), controls for the build in web browser (needs Explorer 4.0+) and so on. Each of the two panes are adjustable by click and holding the left mouse button and dragging the divider (it shows a precentage of area for the divider based on the full screen). At the bottom of each pane, there is a small directory tree icon which will divide it's associate window in two, showing a directory tree of your computer. Clicking on any directory brings up the contents above. Here's a pic of the window setup as I have it installed right now:
Features........... The nice thing about JExplorer is that it has many extras which the internet user may find handy. There is a build in web browser which will open up in one of your panes where you can extend the divider to get a full view. This internal browser still needs Microsoft Explorer 4.0+, so I would consider it more a shell than a seperate program, but is is handy when used in conjunction with the file manager. There is an FTP program which I have used to update my web site for this issue. Usually I use Star Office, but to check out this program, I figured I give it a whirl. The interface of the FTP client is basic but it works great and is very handy for the online user who needs a quick FTP connection. Here's a pic of the FTP interface:
FExplorer also has a built in mail reader which will download your e-mail and allow you to read it. It will also allow you to send files via e-mail directly using your defaut e-mail client (mine is outlook express). Again, this is a mail reader and, with the exception of sending files via e-mail, send can't be done. FExplorer comes complete with built in file compression and decompression and supports many of the major archive types including .zip, .rar, .arj, .cab, .tar, and .ace. There is nothing fancy about the interface for this addition either, but it work and works well. Though it supports many types of decompression archive files, it will only compress in .zip format. A small price to pay for a very handy utility built into a file manager! Here's a pic of the compression utility:
The configuration menu is nothing to write home about, allowing you to enter the basics for the program such as your choice of compression programs, your e-mail client settings, ftp settings, font style and color for panels (the only settings for these), and the dial up network settings. Here's a pic of that window:
Other nice additions are: accessable dos window, folder compairson, print web page/list directory plus more. Problems......... Well, the program runs well but it takes a few moments to get going on my machine. For the features listed, it is worth the wait if JExplorer is what you're looking for. Besides that, it seems very stable. Closing......... JExplorer has many features that an experenced internet user could use while online, all bundled into one great program. The compression utility is fast, the FTP client works great, and of course, it lets you work with your files really well too
