GoldenSection Notes by GTSLabs GoldenSection Notes (GSN) is a great place to develop and store multiple text files. Personally, I'm always on the lookout for any program that deals with text writing and storage. What caught my eye about this program is it's ease of use, the interface and it's "insert" menu (not to mention small icons!!!). First, here's some data! Downloading........ Size zipped: 850k Size Installed: 1.3 megs plus Win/Sys files A fast and quick connection. Less than a minute on DSL in a tri-multiple download of a pic/file/file. They also give you the choice of downloading the self install .exe file, which is about 10k more. The Zip has 5 text files embedded in it, including a file_id.diz. Installation.......... No problem via a simple windows installer. Rebooting in not necessary, but (as usual) I do it anyway, just to reset the log files (and just in case!). Help Files.......... Yes, this program comes complete with a nice selection of help files to get you through the rough times. They are clear, concise, and include pics of the toolbars, windows, etc. Here's a pic of a help window:
Interface........... This is one aspect of GSN that I liked. The interface resembles a small workbook, complete with the "double rings" of a daybook at the junction. The left side shows a page about one third the size of the right page when installed. This is adjustable to the center of the screen, making it look just like a small notebook. Sure, it's not a necessity, but the addition of this little "eye candy" makes me believe that there is care being added into this program. A nice thing to see in freeware!! Here's a pic:
After adjusting the "binder clasps", I noticed that there is a small icon toobar at the top of the screen. This toobar is configurable via the File => Options =>Common/Toolbar window. I left mine alone from install just to show you, but here's a pic of the toolbar config window:
The left page of the screen displays the different folders for the topics. Inside the folders, you can have more folders, or documents, or both!! Highlighting on a page brings it out on the page to the right. A nice feature of this interface is that it looks good even when minimized to 1/4 of the screen! It's features make it still usable. It's great for keeping a text editor a small size while your working on something else. Here's an example:
Features........... Well, there's quite a few for it's small size. Here's a list taken from one of text docs in the zip file: - Easy-to-use - Complete multi-lingual interface (English, German, French, Russian, Polish, Portuguese-br, Slovak, Greek) - Convenient visual tree outline form - Unlimited number of project files and enclosed documents - Minimizes to system tray - Minimizes on close - Customized toolbars - Customized message dialogs - User-defined fonts and documents background - Auto save settings and form position - Printing
Personally, my use of GSN will be for writing reviews, keeping odd bits of info for my site, my garden logbook, and perhaps, contacts dealing with my job. I'm sure this program is small enough to interest the user with limited hard drive space, yet fully featured enough to interest the hardcore text user. A nice addition to this program is the insert menu, which allow you to insert a picture (supports .gif .bmp .ico .emf .wmf) or the Date/Time, a link to a file, or a separator (configurable!). Nice stuff!!. It supports the usual text file attributes such as text formats, location, bullets etc. You can get rid of the left page too by the File => Show Documents Tree (you can insert an icon for this in the toolbar for instant access!). Oh, and it also has URL auto detecting too! One other item about this great program that I should mention is that it supports multiple languages which are: English, German, French, Russian, Polish, Portuguese-br, Slovak, and Greek! Considering the expanse of the internet, it's nice to see developers trying to keep their great programs available in many languages! To top off this program, when the GSNotes is setup to minimize as an icon in the taskbar, and your cursor stays on top of it for a second, a great looking calendar pops up with the current date showing. A nice addition! Problems......... None. Not from me. There's a support e-mail address if you end up with one, but I don't think you will. Closing......... I have reviewed other text editor/managers here at Buzzy's Stall Wall and I include this as one of the best that I've seen. I'm going to be keeping this on my computer for quite a while as spring is starting and these pages will be filled with my gardening logbook. Of course, I'll be doing the reviews in it too, and I'll be sure to keep all visitors informed of the newest releases. I suggest downloading GoldenSection Notes, install it and taking a good look at it. You'll be surprised what you get for it's size.
