For those like me who have a hard time remembering the littlest things (that end up growing into the biggest things!), here's a desktop notes program 'pricelessly approved' by the newsgroup Alt.Comp.Freeware that has many great features to keep you in the know!

1.7 megs HERE!

ATNotes by Thomas Ascher

I'm sure you've seen them! Shots of people sitting at their computer with all kinds of paper notes affixed to their screen, reminding them to pick up guacamole or something similar. No thanks, not for me. After all, this is the 21st century! With ATNotes, you can leave yourself notes the 'geek' way by putting them right on your screen. It nice, tight and ..................... well, here's the guts:

Platform......

From Windows 95 and beyond!

Web Site..........

The fonts are small and it takes a bit to load each page even on DSL, but the layout is neat and to the point. They include many screenshots and mirrors in Chinese and Spanish.

Downloading........

The download doesn't reflect the speed of their pages though as the file arrived quickly.
Size Downloaded: 723k
Size Installed: Aprox. 1.2 megs.

Installation..........

ATNotes follows the standard installation routine of clicking on the self install .exe file, following the install prompt (EULA, directory, etc.), and letting it go! Nothing special to it really.

Help Files..........

The help file for ATNotes is complete and explains all functions of the program including displays of the icons found however, I could not see any screenshots included, most likely to keep the file itself down in size. Again, there are some great shots from the web site. For even MORE information on this freeware, here's the link to the Pricelessware page featuring ATNotes:

Interface & Features ...........

The notes that you make with ATNotes are quite configurable. You can choose what color the note can be, if the note is transparent (XP/2000 only!), the style, size, and alignment of font, the note size, etc. etc.! All of this is performed from the 'settings' window which is available by right clicking on the note icon in your taskbar. This window is tabbed giving you access to all of it's great features. Here's a few screenshots of the different tabbed sections so that you can get a good idea as to what you can do with ATNotes:

Now that you've seen the settings windows, I'll give you an example of a couple of notes that I have on my desktop. With different settings you can make your notes look totally different:

I find that putting my notes in 'transparent' mode gives my desktop a more '3D' effect. Of course there's more to ATNotes than that!
This freebie allows you to set alarms for your individual notes to get your attention. To give you an idea on the alarm settings, here's a pic of the setup window:

The 'Action' tab lets you confirm your note, make it come to the top and flash, or you can play a specific program file such as your word processor to answer a reminder note to write you relative.  The 'Audio Signal' tab lets you set the computer speaker or a separate sound file to play when being notified or, if you wish, you can just keep it silent. In that same tab window you can also test your sound file to make sure it works properly as well as setting it on repeat to keep bugging you when it starts!

To view your notes, ATNotes has a really nice organization window allowing you to see, sort, and work with all of your notes, or just a few chosen ones. Here's a pic of that great interface and work area:

From here, you can sort your notes by seperate catagories such as: notes with alarms, see received notes, select just hidden notes, all your notes or do a search for a specific one. Deleted notes are saved in the recycle bin which is accessible right from the organization window. Restoring a note brings it right back to the desktop.

A nice added feature is the ability to send a note to the desktop of another computer which has been connected in a TCP/IP network. I have not had the ability to give this a try but I have seen nothing mentioned anywhere stating that it doesn't work, so I think it would be safe to assume that it works just fine. If that isn't enough for a 'notes' program, ATNotes gives you a nice, neat calendar that shows on the desktop.

Uninstall......

Uninstalling is no problem. I found that the directories weren't removed so you'll have to do that manually from your file manager.

Problems.......

Of what I am able to do with the program, it's worked excellent. Again I should remind you that I do NOT have the ability to test the network capabilities of ATNotes.

In Closing ..........

Notes, notes, and more notes!! I feel like a true geek, and not one shred of paper on my computer monitor. A great piece of freeware that everyone should keep on their computer, just to be reminded!

Enjoy!!
